Tyres are the only point of contact between your bicycle and the road, making tyre choice one of the highest-impact decisions for ride quality, grip and rolling speed. Road tyres prioritise low rolling resistance and puncture protection; MTB tyres prioritise traction with aggressive knob patterns suited to specific terrain types (loose, packed, wet). Malaysia's roads range from smooth highway asphalt to rough kampung tarmac, and the frequent rain demands tyres with reliable wet-weather grip.
Tyre width has increased across all categories — road bikes now commonly run 28 to 32mm for improved comfort and lower rolling resistance at equivalent pressures, while gravel and adventure bikes run 38 to 50mm. Tubeless tyres offer puncture resistance and the ability to run lower pressures for better grip, at the cost of more complex fitting and the need for periodic sealant top-ups. Clincher tyres with inner tubes remain the most practical choice for most riders.
