Pedals are the contact point between your feet and the bicycle, and the choice between clipless and flat pedals significantly affects riding style and efficiency. Clipless pedals (confusingly named — they use a cleat to lock your shoe to the pedal) improve power transfer and are used by most road cyclists and performance-oriented MTB riders. Flat platform pedals offer full foot freedom and are preferred for trail riding, urban commuting and beginners.
The main cleat systems are Shimano SPD (two-bolt, walkable, popular for MTB and commuting), Shimano SPD-SL (three-bolt, road-only, more efficient platform) and Look Keo (three-bolt, road, similar to SPD-SL). SRAM and Shimano road pedals are cross-compatible with Look cleats. When buying used pedals, check the bearing smoothness by spinning the body on the spindle — any grinding or excessive play indicates worn bearings.

SPD-SL uses a larger three-bolt cleat that protrudes below the sole — making walking awkward but providing a larger, more efficient pedalling platform. SPD-SL is standard for road racing and performance road cycling.
Malaysia's frequent rain and humidity accelerate bearing wear. After wet rides, wipe pedals dry and apply a light lubricant to the axle threads. Overhaul the bearings every six to twelve months depending on usage — a bearing service kit is inexpensive and prevents the far more costly replacement of the entire pedal body.
Two-bolt SPD pedals require shoes with a two-bolt cleat fitting. MTB shoes, gravel shoes and touring shoes all use this standard. Road shoes use three-bolt fittings and are not compatible with SPD pedals without an adapter. Always confirm cleat bolt pattern before purchasing pedals or shoes.
