About Saddles
The saddle is one of the most personal components on a bicycle — the right one prevents numbness, chafing and pressure points, while the wrong one can make even short rides uncomfortable. The most important factor is width: a saddle should support your sit bones (ischial tuberosities), which vary between individuals. Bike shops can measure your sit bone width using a foam pad, and the result guides you to the correct saddle width.
Rail material affects both weight and compliance. Steel rails are durable and affordable. Titanium rails are lighter and absorb road vibration better. Carbon rails are the lightest but brittle and unforgiving on rough roads. For most riders, titanium railed saddles offer the best balance of weight, comfort and price. Used saddles in good condition are a reasonable purchase — leather saddles especially improve with use.

Your sit bone width (measured in millimetres) plus 10 to 20mm is a standard starting point. Bike shops use a foam sit bone measuring pad to find this number.
