Highlights: Easy rest stops, relatively flat terrain, connects to Subang airport runway (closed Sundays) Watch for: Heavy traffic on weekdays during peak hours
Intermediate Routes: Push Your Limits
These routes involve meaningful climbs, longer distances, or busier roads.
4. Gombak Loop (KL → Gombak → Batu Caves → KL)

Route summary: KL → Setiawangsa → Gombak → Batu Caves → Gombak → KL (out-and-back variant available)
Highlights: The climb to Batu Caves is a famous Malaysian cycling test piece. The temple area has food stalls for a post-ride reward. Watch for: Sunday morning has heavy motorcycle traffic near the temple. Start early. Pro tip: Many riders do this as a loop via the old Gombak road — less trafficked than the main route.
5. Broga Hill (Semi-Back Roads)
|--------|------|
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Distance | 40-50 km |
| Elevation | ~500 m gain |

Highlights: Panoramic views from the top, quiet countryside roads, coffee stops in Broga village Watch for: The fire road section is steep and loose in parts — road bikes with 25c+ tyres can manage it, but 28c+ is better. After rain, the fire road can be muddy. Strava segment: Broga Hill climb — competitive riders often use this as a training climb.
6. Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) Loop
|--------|------|

Highlights: The old trunk road to KKB has sweeping bends and minimal traffic. The town has excellent nasi ayam and coffee. Watch for: Watch for dogs on the rural sections. Start early to avoid the midday heat. CTO note: The section between KKB and the Fraser Hill junction is especially scenic and relatively flat.
Advanced Routes: For Serious Riders
7. Kuala Lumpur → Fraser's Hill (Ride In)

|---|---|
| Distance | 90-100 km |
| Elevation | ~1,600 m gain |

Fraser's Hill is the ultimate Klang Valley climbing challenge. The road up is 22 km of consistent gradient averaging 7-8%, with sections hitting 12-15%. It is a legendary ride for Malaysian cyclists.
Route: KL → Karak Highway → Kuala Kubu Bharu → Fraser Hill summit
Highlights: The summit temperature is typically 8-10°C cooler than KL. The cloud forest views are spectacular. The descent is fast — use caution. Watch for: The Karak Highway crossing is dangerous — use the underpass at the KKB turn-off. Rain reduces visibility and makes the descent treacherous. Descend slowly. Fitness requirement: FTP of 3.5 w/kg or higher to complete comfortably Pro tip: Do this ride with a group. Do not attempt solo.
8. Genting Highlands (The Ultimate Climb)
|--------|------|
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Distance | 120+ km |
| Elevation | ~2,300 m gain |
| Difficulty | Expert |
| Surface | Tarmac |
| Best time | Weekday, dry season only |
The Genting climb is Malaysia's most formidable road cycling challenge. From the Karak Highway junction near Gombak to the Genting Highlands resort is 42 km of relentless climbing — one of the longest sustained road climbs in Southeast Asia.
Highlights: The Genting Highlands scenery is unlike anywhere else in Peninsular Malaysia. The summit (1,800m) is cold, often misty, and spectacular. Watch for: Monsin season (Oct-Feb) brings heavy rain and fog. The road surface can be slippery. Avoid if there has been recent heavy rain — landslides are a real risk. Fitness requirement: Reserve strength for the final 10 km which averages 10-12%
